8 days – 7 nights – 6 days riding
This tour has 6 days of riding and goes among beautiful valleys and rivers in Borgarfjörður. This is a tour that starts and end at Oddsstaðir. Everyday the riders get 3 different horses, which means that the riders are guaranteed a broad variety in horses and riding experiences.
Day 1: Arrival
You will be greeted at Keflavik airport, and from there the drive goes to Oddsstaðir.
When arriving at Oddsstaðir farmhouse you will be shown to your room where you will sleep during the stay. All beds are prepared with pillow/blanket and linens. At the farm there is a hot tub, and there is a natural hotspring as well as a swimming pool nearby.
After dining together we will provide information about the next days.
Day 2: Oddsstaðir – Hellur
On the first day of riding we will lead our herd of ca 60 horses from Oddsstaðir, down our stunning valley Lundarreykjadalur on the gravel road. We will then ride on a nice path along the old post road by the mountain Varmarlækjarmúla, we will end the day at Hellum. The first day we will be riding for about 5 hours over a distance of 20 km.
Day 3: Hellur – Sleggjulækur
Today’s ride will start trough an Icelandic birch forest and take us alongside and over a river. We will ride in the valley of Reykholtsdalur right next to Deildartunguhver which is the most powerful hot spring in Europe with a flow rate of 180 l/sec of 100° C water. The ride will go on up in Þverárhlíð and we will end the day at the farm Sleggjulæk.
On this second day of riding we will ride ca 30 km and spend about 6 hours on horseback.
Day 4: Sleggjulækur – Brekka Norðurárdal
Today we will ride alongside the river Þverá, mostly on nice gravel road and grass banks. We will cross the river a few times. Both horse’s and riders usually enjoys the freedom of the wide open spaces in beautiful nature. From the river Þverá we will proceed to the valley Norðurárdal on nice riding paths with stunning nature and view over the valley. Today’s ride will end at the farm Brekka after ca 25km and 5h on horseback.
Day 5: Brekka Norðurárdalur – Tún
We´ll continue our ride in varying and breathtaking surrondings. Our ride will take us up to Grábrók and Rauðbrók, small beautiful eruption centers that gushed about 2 – 3,000 years ago. Along with the lava they make a magical impression. Lake, forest, lava and nice riding paths will sum up today´s ride, that will end on the farm Túni after about 5h, 25km on horseback.
Day 6: Tún – Heggsstaðir
The ride goes along old paths and desolated roads between bushes of low birch trees. We pass the glacier river Hvítá on a bridge. The riding ends at the old farm Heggsstaðir.
The ride is 25 km, 5 hours.
Day 7: Heggsstaðir – Oddsstaðir
Most of the way we ride far away from the traffic, along the grassy banks of the famous salmon river Grímsá. The river is crossed several times and on the way we will have a beautiful view over Borgarfjörður. Horses and riders usually get a full dose of adrenalin during this day with lots of energy and fun. The ride is about 25 km, 6 hours.
Day 8: Oddsstaðir – Reykjavík / Keflavík
After breakfast the people are driven back to Reykjavík or Keflavík depending on what is needed.
